Wednesday night I spent the evening at one of my favorite venues in downtown, La Zona Rosa. My roomie Aimee’ and I went to see one of my favorite artists Tyrone Wells. My goal was to make Aimee’ a fan, and I succeeded. When we got there we found out the show was going to be in the smaller room. There were even chairs in the very front, which was nice. We snagged two of those and awaited for the show to start.
There were two acts that opened. The first was Matt Hires. His style is much like Tyrone Wells. He is a singer-songwriter with a pop rock sound. He did an acoustic set barefoot. I feel like I am seeing more and more artists that enjoy performing with no shoes. He shared with us that his song “Turn the Page” was going to be featured on Grey’s Anatomy. Something he has in common with Tyrone. I really enjoyed his sound and was of course excited to find a new artist to add to my music library.

Next up was the band The Myriad. I had seen them once before when they toured with Phil Wickham. They had played in San Francisco at The Fillmore, which is an amazing venue. I liked them there and I liked them again in this more intimate show. They are an alternative rock group. The difference this time around was the actual band. There were only three of them. Very different from the pic that is below.

Throughout the show they shared some stories. One was after an unexplainable encounter at Gettysburg, they have not been able to contact one of their friends/band mates. I don’t want to go into the story, but it is a crazy one and they hope he is doing well. Two, their drummer was actually diagnosed with cancer. So for the last year they have been laying low, but the Dr.’s gave him the go, so they are back out on the road. With this tour they have teamed up with the United States Humane Society. Funny story. I talked to them after the show and they said the next night they were going to be in Waco playing at Baylor. I told them that Baylor has live mascots and they are in this “refuge” in the middle of the school. They were shocked and didn’t know anything about it, haha. Seems like there is a little conflict of interest 😉
After The Myriad, Tyrone finally took the stage. I had seen him before at SXSW, but never when he was the actual headliner, so this was a real treat. He is a singer songwriter with a pop rock style and you may have heard his songs that have been featured in advertisement’s for Grey’s Anatomy and the movie My Sister’s Keeper.

He ended up playing a good amount of his old stuff, including my favorite song “Wondering Where You Are.” And in between a couple of the songs he shared some of his thoughts (kind of did a mini sermon to encourage the women in the audience) and told a hilarious story of a boyfriend who told his girlfriend he had written all these songs for her, when in reality they were really all of Tyrone’s songs.
Towards the end of the show, Matt Hires, and the Myriad came back out and they all did a rendition of “On the Road Again.” I love it when all the acts get together and perform. It makes me feel like they all really enjoy touring together and are friends. I’m such a girl.
After the show I got a set list (it’s a collection that I have started). I got to chat with Tyrone a little and he was nice enough to sign the set list and take a picture with me. So, it turned out to be a great night.
Until next time…PEACE OUT!
