…Shutter Island

This weekend I realized I need more movie buddies. Not that I don’t mind going to the movies by myself. It may be one of my new favorite things. But I need a more diverse movie buddy group. Saturday morning I went by myself to see “Shutter Island.” I have been waiting for this film to come out FOREVER. I remember seeing the first preview before “Public Enemies” and that was back in July. No one else I know wanted to see it with me. Everyone was freaked out.

I don’t get scared very easily. My top 2 scary movies are the original “When A Stranger Calls” and the newer “Amityville Horror.”

The first time I saw “Stranger” I was in high school. My friends and I loved to have movie nights, especially  to watch scary movies. I think this was an excuse for all of us the huddle together. For the boys to watch the girls freak out and for them to feel like protectors, even though they were as scared as the rest of us. Most of us were babysitters, so the possibility of what goes on in this film, happening to each of us was horrifying. Needless to say I think I took a break from babysitting for a while. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. It’s way better than the new one. Speaking of the new one, I believe the Stafford girls have my copy, so if you read this, can you please mail it to me? THANKS.

“Amityville” is a flashback to college at UNR. My friends and I all went and saw this one in the theater. I don’t think any of us had seen the original and we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into. I’m not much of a demonic scary movie person. After watching this I felt nauseous the rest of the night. When we got back to my friend Craig’s apartment, we realized his apt. number was the same as the house from the movie. It FREAKED us out. And for the rest of the night I was left consoling my good friend Brianne because she couldn’t stop crying. I will not be watching this movie again anytime soon.

So, going back to “Shutter Island.” Because I was going solo I went to the first showing on Saturday morning, 10:20AM. Crazy they start movies that early. And because I went that early my movie was only $5.25! That is a steal. Which is why I think so many people were there. My theater was almost full. Not expecting that.

When the movie began, I started to get a little nervous. The opening scene is Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo on a boat going to the island. The background was fake, which made it a distraction. Also, the acting seemed forced and not natural. Luckily, the longer the movie went on, the better the acting became from everyone.

I like Martin Scorsese’s directing. He has had some great films. One of my favorite is “The Departed.” “Island” is set in 1954 and the directing style definitely makes you feel like your in that decade.

The movie is a psychological thriller. So, for all of you who thought it was more of a horror, no worries. There wasn’t even a part where I jumped. This isn’t to say that the movie was all roses and daisies. There are very disturbing parts, but nothing that should give you nightmares. Because of the more psychological aspect, for a good part of the movie I began to lose interest. I wanted to get to the punch line. I waited it out and the end was the best reward (even if I did suspect it half-way through). If you enjoy movies like “6th Sense” and “Identity” then you should like this one. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Until next time…PEACE OUT!
