…where Avatar is a success!

February 6th, 2010 is the day I finally got to see “Avatar.” Here is the back story:

I had no desire to see “Avatar.” I’m not a huge sci-fi person. So when I saw the trailer I wrote it off. But of course it is a movie with new 3-D technology and breaks every record. I decided to see it in January right after the new year, but didn’t want to go to this one on my own. I decided to go see it on the IMAX 3-D. I figured, go big or go home. For some reason Austin has only one IMAX. I could be wrong, but when I search Bob Bullock is the only one that comes up. If I am wrong someone please enlighten me, so I don’t have this problem when I go see “Alice and Wonderland” next month.

Anyways, I got two of my friends to go with me. We decided to head down on a Sunday afternoon. We got there and it was sold out. SUCK. We decided we would go the next Sunday, but order our tickets online. We waited until Thursday…they were sold out already! Right then we decided to buy tickets for the following Sunday. After we did that we then realized we all had an earlier commitment with a church event, so we had to call and get our tickets changed for the following Sunday. After doing that, we realize, shoot! That’s the Super Bowl!  And the following Sunday is of course V-Day, so that’s a no go (not for me of course, but my friends that are going are engaged ).  I was at a conference on Friday night, but lo and behold, we finally were able to switch it to Saturday night after my conference was over.

We got to the theater about 45 minutes before the show started and we were in the back of the line…people are crazy! We didn’t get the worst of seats…we were probably 5th row, a little left of center. The glasses were sweet! I really wanted to take them home with me, but there was a detector on our way out that would have gone off and that would have been a disaster. I could have been thrown in jail for that here in TX, HAHA.

Going into the movie, this was my expectation: Beautiful movie, awesome effects, a little long, OK plot, good film, but not the best movie. And that’s exactly what I got.

I really did enjoy it. I would love to live on Pandora, at night, without all the creepy species. I want all the plants to light up and for the ground to illuminate where I walk. The closest thing I get to that now is walking on the beach on the wet sand.

For those of you who are not into sci-fi and “aliens” like me, no worries. While you are watching it, you don’t even really think of them that way. You see them as a different people group not “aliens.”

The acting was fine. Only a few cheesy parts. Stephen Lang did a great job with his character Colonel Miles Quartich. I HATED him. Which is exactly what Cameron wanted me to feel.

The 3-D was so clear. There were a few times where I felt like I was right there and it was going on right in front of me. Very cool. I felt a little sick in the beginning, but my body adjusted quickly.

I’m still sticking to my guns on the belief that I think it was a good film and definitely should win every technical award at the Oscars, but I believe the Globes got it wrong and I’m hoping the Oscars get it right. It should not win for Best Film. I am pulling for “Hurt Locker” for Best Film and Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director.

Until next time…PEACE OUT!
