…where I love The Bobby Bones Show

I have resided in Austin for about 8 months now. The time has definitely flown by. To help that time fly by I have come across something that has given me much joy in life. It is The Bobby Bones morning show on KISS 96.7.

For the past three months I have been downloading podcasts of the entire show. I have never listened to them live because one-I don’t get up until 8:30 and two-I don’t have a radio in my room, so when I do wake-up I end up just listening to my iPod. This is somewhat unfortunate because there have been times when listening to the podcast that I have wanted to call in or play a game and I, of course, cannot do that. That is the only downside. The upside is that I get to hear the show in its entirety. And I love that.

In Sacramento I use to listen to the country morning show on 105.1 KNCI because I loved the DJ’s Pat and Tom. They were funny, always had good interviews, and entertained me. Coming into Austin I really didn’t even turn my radio on. I have become so sucked into my iPod and loving no commercials that I don’t  bother listening to radio anymore. I had heard a few friends talk about this radio show, but didn’t think anything of it. But then my roommate began to tell me how good it was and that I could download the podcast, so  I decided to give it a try.

The show is composed of Bobby (head DJ), Amy (co-host), and Lunchbox (aka LB, co-host), as well as Carlos (producer) and every once in a while you will hear Alayna (producer) or some of the interns.  Each person is so different, which makes for a very entertaining show.

Bobby is the in the middle man. He loves his fantasy football, but then he likes Twilight. It’s interesting listening over the past few months and hearing about his life. I don’t know many other DJ’s who open up so much, yet he still manages to keep some things private. It definitely makes the listeners feel like they know him.

Amy is the solo girl of the group and I do feel for her at times. I have worked around mostly guys as well, and know what it is like to be picked on sometimes-or the guys forget that I am a girl and don’t want to hear certain things. But she holds her own, and the guys are usually not that bad, most of the time Bobby sticks up for her. She is the more conservative one and half the time she is not even in the studio, she moved away and they keep her on the show and just “skype” (or something like that) her in. She has a segment where she tells a joke and its 25% chance that it’s going to be funny, which then makes the segment funny in itself.

LB…how should I describe him…he is very confident in himself, loves “hot”/”easy” women, and enjoys playing soccer. He is definitely needed in the show, he give a lot of comic relief and I love when they play games and he screams, its hilarious.

Carlos usually comes on after the first 2 segments because he is still working on audio clips for the show. He just had a birthday-he turned 29, but you would think he was 21 by his partying ways. He loves UT football-recently the morning show went on a celebratory trip to Chicago because they were number one for another year (Congrats!) and he spent a good chunk of that time in one bar watching the game. A true fan.

This is how a typical show goes:

They usually start out with Celebrity Birthdays and the Bonehead Story of Day (a story about someone who was doing something stupid). Then Amy does the skinny which is celebrity gossip. Throughout the show they talk about relevant pop culture events, what’s going on in their own lives, introduce new music, share music they download, listeners call in, they do interviews, pull pranks, and my favorite part: they play games.

They have a few that they play quite often. Everyday there is “What Year Was It.” In this game they give one song, one movie, one news story, and one pop culture event. They all guess what year it was and then they have a listener pick too. Another game is “Name That Tune.” Songs are chosen and they all correlate with a theme. If you guess the theme you get 3 points, you also get one point for getting the artist and one point for the name of the song. There are also a few movie trivia games that are fun as well.

Listening to the show has been fun, but it has caused me to not listen to my other podcasts or music. It is hard to find enough time to listen to the show. When my mom came out to visit from CA, she dreaded getting in the car and driving with me somewhere because she knew what we were going to listen to. Secretly, I think she liked it, but even if she didn’t its payback for those years growing up that she made me listen to Dr. Laura-my show is ten times better. I have also made some new fans. I have at least 2 friends from Cali that have begun to podcast the show and I’m hoping it will spread more.

When I talk to my friends that are also avid listeners to the show Bobby Bones definitely becomes a part of our conversations. We always bring up something that was on and talk/laugh about it for a while. It’s great.

Well, I guess I have talked about the show enough. If my blog hasn’t convinced you that it is an entertaining show than judge it for yourself. If you are in the Austin area it is on 96.7 from 6am-10am. If you are anywhere else you can podcast them. Go to their site: BobbyBonesShow. Here you can listen straight from the site or you can subscribe. Or if you have an iPhone or a blackberry you can download the iheartradio app. and listen to them on there as well.

Enjoy the show and until next time…PEACE OUT!

  1. He loves twilight but the books give him nightmares. But yes I agree Bobby Bones show is legit. Love the games! Only if I can get the podcast to upload to my phone so I can listen. I have to listen from my computer right now.
